Maple Valley Greenhouse
Loess Hill, IA
Since 1994, the Maple Valley Anthon-Oto High School Agricultural Education program has been teaching students the importance of agriculture and emphasizing the connections between food production and consumption. With the combined efforts of Campbell, FFA, PALS (Partners in Active Learning Support—a mentoring program developed by FFA) and community volunteers, a high-tunnel greenhouse was constructed between the elementary and high school buildings to help further the agricultural understanding of these students.
Not only do the students learn about garden care and agricultural production, but they also recognize that most agricultural ventures require some business acumen as well. After all, you have to sell some of your vegetables so you can sustain your garden.
Currently, the students are growing a wide variety of crops including tomatoes, radishes, spinach, lettuce, broccoli, raspberries and cabbage plants. This greenhouse will have a positive impact on the students and the community for a long time to come.
