When it comes to tomatoes and tomato soup, why does Campbell's soup come to mind?

As Tim Gruenwald, our Director of Agriculture, put it: "For over 100 years Campbell has maintained the quality of our tomatoes by actively advising our farmers at every step in the growing process."

Try these simple tips from our tomato-growing experts to help your tomatoes grow plump and perfect.

From The Ground Up: Planting tomato seeds is delicate work. Make sure your seeds are planted 1/4 inch deep, with about 3 seeds per inch. You 'Can' Do It: An empty Campbell's® soup can is just the right size for growing seedlings. Mulching, or covering the soil with an organic or inorganic compost, is a great way to help conserve water and prevent soil diseases from contaminating plants. Let There Be Light: Tomato seedlings love light. Give them a lot of direct sunlight or place them a few inches from fluorescent grow lights for about 15 hours a day. They Grow Up So Fast: If you're growing tomatoes inside, be sure to transplant your seedlings to a larger pot when they're 5 inches tall to give the roots room to grow.
Moving Day: When moving a plant to a garden or raised planter box, be sure to dig a deep enough hole to bury the lower set of leaves so the plant can develop a healthier root system. Give Some Support: If your tomato plants look like they're starting to fall over, try supporting them with a trellis or wooden stake. For added support try garden tape. To Pick, or Not to Pick: You should pick a tomato when it has a deep (or rich) red color and feels slightly soft. A tomato ripens from the inside out, so when it looks ready, it probably is. Handle with Care: How you store tomatoes can affect their flavor and texture. Ideally, you should store them at room temperature (70 degrees F) and out of direct sunlight with the stems up.
