Washington Heights
Community Garden
Chicago, IL
The Washington Heights Community Garden, located on the south side of Chicago, was started in 2008 by Urban Farming. The garden is in an open lot, making it free for the community to access 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The success of the garden is truly a community effort, teaching local youth about planting, maintaining and harvesting. Last year, young volunteers from the neighborhood created a delivery service to bring the garden's fresh produce to the elderly of the community.
Campbell, FFA, Urban Farming, community volunteers and students from Mt. Greenwood Elementary and Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences doubled the garden's size by planting tomatoes, sweet peppers and carrots, grown from Campbell's seeds, as well as collard greens, cabbage, corn, basil and rosemary. This garden will continue to provide for the community, both young and old alike.
The FFA chapter involved in helping maintain the garden is: Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences
